Srimad Bhagavatham says Lord Krishna came as an avatar to uphold Dharma and show us how to live a life of spiritual perfection. When HE was a spiritual guide in front of Arjuna he was Janardhana- one who dispels (ardana) darkness (jana). By doing so, HE liberates from the cycle of birth and death (Jana+ardhana). HE is also the killer of the demon Jana. Hari Om.
