Dear Rajammaji,
Actually we are not prostrating before the Deity, but surrendering or dissolving before the Chaithanyam in us and the Deity.
Arathy is seeing and honouring that Chaithanyam.
Kurmam represents the mind that has the ability to go outwards to the world and come back inwards to the Self like a tortoise extends its limbs outwards and shrinks them inwards.
