Dear Swamiji, As said death rites are only a prayer by the children. Then why we do asthi sanchayanam taking bones from the cremation place and combine it as a human form and do nithya bali for 15 days saying with each bali, atma gets a new body, ie; with first day karma eyes, next day ears, next day mouth, next day nose, next day skin, next day bones, next day nerves, next day flesh, next day brain, next day hands, next day legs etc etc…and give energy to the soul to move to pithru loka. crossing many obstacles like vaitharani river. These are explained in Garuda purana, when Garuda asked Vishnu about the atma after death. Most of the Hindus follow this and spend money for this. With or without such rites, if atma will still progress, then why should we continue such rites. Pls advs.

As Veda Vyasa has clearly said a lot of explanations in Puranas are done in an elaborate way to convey a principle to common man’s limited intellect. Here the movement of the soul to a new body has been explained over a period of 16 days while it is clearly understood that a soul may not take a new birth for several years depending on its karmic wealth. However we as a family imagine that our dear departed soul has been prayed for all it needs to take a new body at the earliest. We should understand these rites also give the bereaved family a way to cope with their loss as they imagine their beloved person acquiring a new birth and body. Hari Om.
