Dear Swamiji, Brahmin’s death ceremony is on 12th and Nairs on 16th. But now a days most of the nair karayogam decided to conduct this on 12th as they have no time to wait further 4 days. We used to say “pathinaru adiyanthiram”. which is reduced to 12th day. They decided without discussing with priests and since “pula” ends only on 16th, is there any logic in conducting this on 12th. More over on 16th when “sapinnikaranam” is done, we chant narayaneeyam and vishnu sahasranamam at the time of uniting departed father or mother with their ancestors in pithru loka (bhuvar loka). Can we chant narayaneeyam and vishnu sahasra namam on 12th day when “pula” is prevailing. Pls advs..

It is important to understand why we practice certain rituals a certain way. In the olden days, when infectious deaths were common and joint family was the norm, it was important for family members to stay away from social gatherings and mourn at home for 16 days. They suspended their regular chanting of Sahasranamam and Narayaneeyam and started again after this period. Now, we live in a time of efficiency and productivity. Families have become nuclear and hygiene has improved. There is no reason for long bereavement routines, and it would be a toll on people’s life if we strictly enforce such things. Flexibility is allowed according to the times and place when it comes to rituals(kaladesa anusari). If someone wants to follow the 16 day ritual it is fine, but everyone has a personal mourning time. We need to live in the present time with this understanding. Hari Om.
