Dear Swamiji – I do have a question regarding lighting lamp in house everyday. We have been lighting lamp every day in morning and evening. We used to light a lamp with one thiri and facing east. But I hear that it is wrong. Lighting with only one thiri is wrong . You should always light the lamp using 5 thiris. Could you please let me know what is the best practice and what are the significances? Thanks, Murali

Lighting the lamp for worship is one of the simplest yet most profound of our practices. Ideally It should be done with 2,3 or 5 wicks (thiris). Two to symbolize the male and female energies, three for health and five for prosperity. Light creates an area of ethereal sphere around it which is similar to the environment that exists inside temples or is believed to permeate the atmosphere in Satya yuga, hence very conducive to spiritual upliftment. That is why we sit near the lighted lamp to pray. Hari Om
