Dear swamiji, if god is so generous and compassionate why did he create poor animal such as a deer as the prey of a ferocious animal lion? I have been trying to find an answer for this question for the past one year. In one of the books I read Osho mentioning about this. He is saying that the lion has got an intense love towards the deer but the love is very wild. The deer is finally merging with the lion & they are becoming one. In one of the discourses I heard a swamiji saying about this as when the lion catches the deer, the deer just tries to jump and escape from the grasp of the lion one or two times and after that it surrenders itself with ease before the lion , to become its food. When I asked about this to a swamiji at chinmaya mission he told about this that the lion catches only those deer’s which are old weak and unable to run and moreover it does not attack any animals when it is not hungry. But in the discovery channel I have seen a lion catching a baby deer & toying with it before killing it and abandoning its corpse without eating. As I am not getting a satisfactory answer to this question I am not being able to love god & surrender before him completely. Swamiji could u please answer my question.

Do not think of God as a creator who created a world with differential abilities. The animal world is a world of survival where the powerful subdues the weak. What differentiates man’s intellect from that of the wild forest is his ability to reason, have logical thinking and discrimination. When these abilities get better and we are able to love everything around us and our consciousness becomes pure and devoid of violence and hatred. The power or energy that this pure consciousness represents is GOD. If man does not exhibit divine characters like love, compassion, discrimination etc. he is exactly like an animal killing or hurting others for his survival. So, the animalistic behavior happens in the absence of GOD. Hari Om.
