Dear Swamiji, Pranam!!How should God be loved?? The Gopis of Braj performed all the chores of the house – sweeping, churning the curd, feeding their child – but tears were flowing from their eyes while remembering Shyam Sundar. They never desired for ‘ liberation’ or ‘self realisation’ or Mukti’. They have considered all these mukti as a desire for the self. They always loved krishna for Krishna’s happiness rather than their happiness. A true example of ‘ Nishkam Prem/Nishkam Bhakti. That is the reason krishna was very close to them and loved them so much.Swamiji, my question is “How should God be loved” and how to attain the ‘Gopi bhaav’ Bhakti??

It is interesting to note, Narada Maharshi explains in Bhagavatham that Bhakti could be expressed through various emotions. Love, fear, friendship, desire or even hatred. The important point here is Bhagavan does not discriminate between any of these emotions. This is exemplified in stories of Kamsa, Ravana and Hiranyakasipu. No matter what the bhaktibhaava, it is the conviction that gets credit. Even while constantly hating Bhagavan, Kamsa and Ravana had their minds fixated on him. It is that constant remembrance of the Divine, that we need to adopt in our lives. Whatever fixes your heart in HIM is the right Bhaava. You can choose any emotion that helps you identify with the Divinity in you and express it gracefully in every thought and deed to the people you see around. It is through selfless service with love and compassion that you love God. That will be the present day Gopibhaava. Hari Om.
