Dear Swamiji. Should we observe “pela” for a distant relative who is not staying in the same house or town?? Thank you for the spirtual journey of 108 days in Kochi. My life has changed for ever.

Dear Rema,
Observing pela is not a mandatory ritual in our scriptures. In Ramayan & Bhagavatham there is no mention about pela. Moreover,in kerala tradition, each caste observes pela for different time periods. The scientific reason behind pela is related to our mind. The loss of beloved one gives some sort of mental agony. When they come in contact with others they transmit their pain to others.Hence,in order to accept the loss & regain their strength some period of time has been mentioned. Those who are mentally strong(eg Sanyasis) do not observe pela.
