Dear Swamiji, I’m a degree student. My problem is that i get negative thoughts. My negative thoughts keep changing. Now i’m getting thoughts about fatal diseases. I try to prevent those thoughts but when i try to prevent it it comes back to me again and again. I get such thoughts when i pray or chant mantras then i will get frightened whether it will affect me. Some people asked me to meditate but even when i meditate i get these thoughts. My friend asked me to distract myself but when i do something these thoughts come and it affects my activities. I get questions like why some people are suffering and why some people are happy then i started thinking why i’m bothered. I even get thoughts like whether these thoughts will affect my future birth. Some people ask me to surrender to god. What should i do Swamiji? Please help. When i do some activity if i’m getting such thoughts what can i tell myself so that i feel protected and taken care of by god. Because of these thoughts i find it difficult to visit temples and even to pray to god and chant mantras. Whenever i come to know that some people suffered from a fatal disease i get negative thoughts about that disease and it has gone to such an extent whenever i get the thought of that person i try to shoo them away. Why is it happening to me? I have seen many people who hear such news and it does not affect them. What should i do or how should i react to such a news? And also please tell me what should i do when i get negative thoughts about fatal diseases or any other thing for that matter. How to surrender these thoughts and myself to god? What i can tell myself so that i feel protected and taken care of by god. Please advise. Belated Deepavali Wishes! Ashwin

Dear Ashwin,
A weak mind thinks about problems only – diseases, failure, discontentment etc.
A strong mind accepts every thing as the Gift of the Lord and never thinks about future with fear. It will lead to regret about the past later as today’s performance decides your tomorrow’s happiness.
The only way to escape from destructive thoughts is by replacing them with constructive thoughts.
Do Sadhana and meditation (refer to the Sadhana pages in this site) regularly.
If you practice with commitment for two weeks, you will see the positive change definitely.
