Dear Swwamiji, I had attended the Arya vVaidya Pharmacy Sapthagam held in Coimbatore betwen 28th to 4th April2010. In the course of your lecure,you have refered to the PITRU THARPANAM . being Tamil brahmins, i have seen many of our relatives doing only this and they give some money to the vedic pundit on a monthly basis and thru the Annual Sradham ceremony. Is it a waistful exercise or an exercise to be dispensed with? According to my pandit, all these KRIYAS are written in the SMRITHI. Can you guide? Hariharakrishnan.M.

Dear Hariharakrishnan,
All such Kriyas are mentioned in the Smritis like Mahabharatham (Pandavas did Tharpan for Kauravas), Ramayanam etc.
But we depend on Vedantha; it says you can not give Mukthi to the departed soul by any such rituals.
While living a human life, one should try to uplift his/her mind through Sadhana.
