Hari Om Swamiji, I used to chant Gayathri Mantra for the last 1 year. But recently I happened to attend a discourse at my home, there the acharya told that ladies should not chant Gayathri Mantra. In Brahmins this Mantra is a upadesam by the priest during upanayanam. If ladies chant this Mantra the effect will be opposite. After that I stopped chanting this Mantra. Swamiji please clarify me my doubt. And also is there any niyama for chanting this Mantra. Please advise. Hari om

The counter question to this Acharya is, “in which one of our scriptures does it say that women should not chant Gayathri”. Gayathri is a very powerful Mantra with effects on your body and psyche. But the belief that women are weak to handle it, has no scriptural backing. These are false beliefs than creeped in our community in the medieval times. It is nice to see some Ashrams have started giving Bhramopadesam to women as well. Sanathanadharma does not differentiate men/women at any level. Hari Om.
