Hari Om, Swamiji ! I was fascinated by our mythology even when I was a child. I’ve read the Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bhagavatha and most of the Puranas. But only recently did I discover that most of those stories are metaphorical and are meant to teach us symbolic truths( like Shri Hanuman being a tribal human instead of a monkey etc) Can you suggest books or articles so that I can understand the symbolic truths behind our stories ? Also, I read that Lord Krishna didn’t actually lift the Govardana mountain and that “Govardanodharanam” actually refers to the nature worship and practises done by Krishna to uplift the mountain and the people living in it. Is this true ? Which feats of Krishna presented in the Bhagavatham are to be taken literally and which ones have a deeper, spiritual meaning ?

I have mentioned this in prior answers. Puranas are not historical narratives. There are very important Tatwas that are hidden in every story. The reason they are kept as stories is to really preserve the essence from being lost over time. Like you mentioned, stories fascinate and lure you into the Puranas when you are simple- hearted or child like. Eventually you understand they denote much higher messages to live by and enrich our lives. There are several books that decode the mythology. It is more interesting to analyze them on your own, and understand it, in a way that benefits your life. Hari Om.
