Dear Mithra,
Siva means the SOUL or Chaithanyam; Parvathi means the mind.
Parvathi is the daughter of Himavan; similarly mind is the child of the Lord.
As Parvathi dissolves into Siva, the mind should melt into the Lord.
There the marriage (union) of Jeevathma and Paramathma – or Kalyanam which means the auspicious, glory and happiness of an individual – happens.
For this, we have to take a Vrutham – the penance in which the mind Parvathi with a total dedication completely focus on Siva (the Truth), the power which gives happiness and protection and complete salvation.
This single pointed penance is called Thiruvathira.
