Dear Sandhyaji,
Mind is the bundle of accumulated conscious thoughts. Only through brain it can manifest, but for its existence the brain is not needed.
(Like electric power can provide light only through a filament, but it is not required for its existence).
When somebody is in coma, the mind has stopped its function through the brain.
During sleep the mind remains in its subtle state in the conscious energy.
To understand this, you have to observe within through meditation.
Hariom!
