Hello Swamiji, Could you please tell me the correct procedure to take upavasam with nama japam? Is it like no food at all ? or with restricted food? Thanks for your time.

“Upa + Vasam” means “living close to”, meaning living in proximity to the Divine. It is wrongly equated to fasting. During Upavasam one is supposed to eat ‘sattvic’ foods (food that promotes calmness and piety) like milk and fruits, only as much as needed to maintain the body and the bodily functions and spend all the remaining time in penance. The penance could be in any form such as meditation, chanting, worship or listening to stories that promote the ‘sattvik’ qualities. Mere fasting without penance cannot bring any of these positive changes. Trying to repress the senses (‘indriyas’) without penance is not advisable. Thus doing Upavasam properly is not only essential for proper physical health but also for a healthy mind set and for any tangible beneficial effects. Hari Om.
