i am a regular observer of “bhagavatham” telecast in asianet. i have a doubt according to hindu philosophy and religious ethics, if a man is dead his soul will be departed from the body and enters into a seperate birth. if that is so,what is the logic in conducting beli for the departured soul and other rituals like 16th celebrations and anniversary etc

Dear Vamiro,
It is not the soul, but the mind that departs. Just think about yourself.
Your whole body is filled with Chaithanyam. But your mind is not filled with body.
That means, when you think about one part of the body, the mind is detached from the other patrs of the body.
The doctor can stop the movement of the mind from one part to another part; but he can not do anything with Chaithanyam.
In deep sleep, mind is completely detached from the body. Still Chaithanyam remains!
So, mind can detach and attach from one body to another.
To understand this and to develop inquisitiveness about the source of the mind and the way to take the mind to that source, this kind of rituals are developed.
A person who understands the meaning behind the rituals and practising regularly to realize that meaning are exempted from these rituals. That is why, in our tradition, Sanyasis and Great Souls do not observe this kind of rituals.
