I have heard that Poonthanam Namboodiri, who was very attached to his son, overcame his grief over the loss of his only child and attained the supreme by accepting Krishna as his son and thus Njanapana was composed. So can a deep wound or personal loss be accepted as God in a male or female form and then begin the upasana that way?

Yes, very much.
Every mind is free and it has the freedom to visualize and concentrate and hold on the form within.
Unless you practise you won’t get it.
