i was told that i should not recite the gayathri mantra cos, i am not initiated by a guru and i am not a brahmin. Is it true?

Gayathree manthra is for purifying one’s own mind.
It is said every one can recite without any initiation.
Just do with devotion, not with fear and suspicion.
