kodi pranamam swamiji, Recently we had been to Rameswaram and all through our trip we were able to recollect the whole Ramayana. Suddenly, my son asked that there are so many evidences to believe the Lord Rama existed here and it is said that Vanaras b uilt Rama Sethu under the leadership of Nala. Were they really mionkeys? How come a powerful monkey with long tail sit in front of strong Ravana and debate. And we have no scientific evidence to proove that Hanumanji was a monkey. Swamiji, please help me to answer him? with prayers…..

Hanuman was a highly advanced tribal person who is represented as a monkey because that is a symbolism for the always agitated human mind. Ramayana shows how the agitated mind can be transformed to conquer our kingdom within. The word “Vanara” meaning looking like human, was used to denote the tribal community.
Hanuman is the son of Vayu meaning the mind is born of the subtle. But unlike the mind of Ravana who seeks material pleasures Hanuman represents a mind that seeks self realization. Such a mind(hanuman)approaches the divine(Rama) in the form of a Brahmin meaning we start seeking the divine through rituals. He then comes to the big ocean to cross. He is guided by Jambavan who makes him realize his potential. Jambavan represents the Guru who makes us aware of our potential to walk the spiritual journey. Rama crosses the ocean with the vanaras. The divine walks with you in your journey to destroy your vasanas and karmas. Hanuman remains with Rama for ever. A realized devotee always remains with the divine.
The story of the tail being burned is a dramatic explanation of his body being set on fire. Our scriptures have adopted some facts and persons from history and through their life stories tried to convey great metaphysical principles. While the story part is good for a little one, the curious child like your kid should be give the “tatwam”. All scriptural characters are depicted in a way to teach us the way to the divine. Since people are of different profiles, you are able to pick, choose and identify with the one that suits your needs for spiritual growth and realization. Hari Om.
