Dear Mithraji,
The number 8 represents the eight elements of prakrithy ( earth ,water,heat,air,space,mind ,intellect,and ego).
( Refer Gita 7th chapter, 4 th & 5th sloka).
16000 represent nerves or 16000 modifications which is happening to our body.
So these are not physical wives, they are different aspects of our body or mind.
