When the soul leaves a body, it may acquire a new body soon or after several years depending on its karmic wealth. But we say the Athma hovers around its familiar surroundings for some time in the disembodied state, before it detaches completely. This is more like a consolation to the family and relatives, to slowly come to terms with their loss. Knowing that their dear one is close to them, though they don’t physically see them, will help to cope with the bereavement easier. That is why we keep the asthi at home sometimes upto one year before final rites. Hari Om.
