Namaskaram Swamiji. My pranams to you. I would like to know how to meditate. As I have learnt in different yoga centres in different ways. Each place they teach is different. Don’t know which to follow. Also recently in the Internet I came to see a video of a yogi yoktananda I think, saying the dangers of doing meditation. Pls advise the correct way of doing meditation. Should we tell ohm if so how many times and should we sit with chin mudra or right palm on left and right feet on left? And how long and how many times a day should we do meditation? Some say we should never focus on anything and let the thoughts come and go but some says we should focus on our ishta devtha or light in between our eyebrows, really confusing. Swamiji pls advise how can we meditate and how long and how many times a day. Thank you Swamiji. Hari Om

It is not “how to meditate”, but “how to be meditative”, that is important. Being meditative is the ability to watch what you think at every moment, and manipulate your thoughts to be positive. Focussing on ishtadevatha, or letting thoughts flow, are all methods to help you develop that ability to channel your thoughts positively. Intense meditation techniques should be done under supervision or can alter your brain functionality. So take it easy, do yoga for 15-30″, then chant Om while focussing on your breath for 10″. After that, you can visualize your ishtadevatha for 10″ while keeping your mind in focus on details. This will help you develop the power to be aware of your thinking process. Hari Om.
