Any offering is done as a way of athmasamarpanam. But in the medivial period people started doing animal sacrifices, narabali etc. as a way of highest offering. Some of our rituals even today are remnants of such belief. There is no reason to torture anyone to please God. Such rituals will stop when the society begins to understand what Devi represents and can rise to the invoke her powers within ourselves. Hari Om.
