We have historical evidence from Dwaraka excavation and so on supporting these facts. Please refer to my previous answer on this topic.
But we give more importance to the Thathwam behind it.
Understand, there had been so many battles in the history of mankind. Why a Mahabharatha war is so important?
Because, never before or after, a war has imparted this much Knowledge to mankind.
When the philosophy or wisdom shines like a Sun, the importance of Statistics fade away.
But it does not mean that one should deny it.
