As a symbol of surrendering ourselves to the Lord (athma samarapanam) we submit flowers, fruits, our efforts, knowledge etc. to Bhagavan. Since our society was predominantly an agricultural community, our crop was a big offering to God those days. So people started doing one, five, or ten paras full of grain and other offerings. The point to know here is, it is not what you offer but the mindset with which you offer, that is important. Hari Om.
