Pranam Swamiji, Before sending pregnant Sita to the forest, did Rama discuss the issue with Sita and did she give her consent to go or as most stories say did Rama ask Lakshmana to leave her in the forest without even telling her why he was doing so? If the second version is true then why did he do not tell her before taking this step? Sita was completely devoted to Rama. She went with him to spend 14 years in exile, suffered in Ravana’s captivity, gave agni pariksha too but never complained. She would have understood and accepted his decision. Every time I go to Shri Rama temple and I stand before the idols of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana I keep thinking of this issue. Sita never actually had a place in Ayodhya, Ayodhya has never respected its women, look at the state of Ayodhya today!

I totally agree with you that a place/person that disrespects/hurts women will suffer. Ramayana itself is a proof for that. Now, to answer your specific query, Valmiki has not explicitly said the entire detail was discussed with Sita. But we cannot analyze events centuries ago from the socio-cultural frame we have today. Next time you go a Rama temple and see Ram and Sita together, focus on the fact that Ram followed “Eka Pathni vrutam’ in a society, at a time when he could have had any number of wives. A wife could not ask for anything more than a husband’s devoted mind. Focus on a Ram that spend years searching for Sita, to rescue her from Ravana at a time when abduction of a queen, by another king was not uncommon. Think of a Ram who forsake all luxuries at the palace and slept of the floor or ate only wild fruits and berries when Sita was away. I am not justifying Ram or trying to downplay what Sita went through. But as a devotee, it is better that you focus and learn from the goodness of their lives. It is ok to focus on their problems as well, as long as it will enable us to treat women with more consideration in our society. Hari Om.
