Dear Shariraj,
The significance of vasthrapaharanam understood by you is correct.
White represents purity. This dress code is prevalent only in Kerala. Our traditional clothes are in white. So wearing them to temples conform to the idea of wearing white to represent a pure mind. But when Keralites started wearing non-traditional clothes, the restriction was introduced to follow our old tradition.
In fact, no restriction is needed as long as your mind is pure.
