Pranam Swamiji, yesterday I went to a Subrahmanya temple and there are so many devotees who have been in ‘vritham’ for ‘vel kuthu’. At the time of ‘dheeparathana’ some of them behaved unnaturally (like ‘thullal’). Is there any scientific explanation behind this? Swamiji, do you think ‘vel kuthu’ is necessary for blessings from God? Or is there any benefit of doing that instead of understanding the ‘Supreme power’? I totally disagree with that custom. If I am right how can I convey this to those devotees!

Rituals and practices have deep rooted impressions in people’s mind and when attached to faith it is hard to question. The better approach here, is to teach them the essence of Sanathanadharma and develop an elite understanding of spirituality. What you see at deeparadhana is only an expression of extreme devotion and wanting to be one with the Divine. But that oneness can be achieved and expressed in much nobler ways without dramatic ritualism. It will change with understanding. Hari Om.
