When you meditate with the help of a form of God it is Savikalpa Samadhi.
When you transcend the form and dives into formless meditation, it is Nirvikalpa Samadhi.
Sampoojya Swami Chinmayanadaji says, it is like a pole vaulter who uses a pole to reach the highest state and then discards the pole to dive down.
