Pujya Swamiji, Bhagavan says in the Gita that one must do one’s own prescribed duty without attachment, for the sake of sacrifice. I’m thinking that the word ‘prescribed’ means that which is prescribed by the Veda, according to the catur-varna. My question is that in the context of profession in today’s world, when everyone is free to choose and navigate his/her career, according to one’s ambition, can that still be considered as doing one’s prescribed duty ? Having ambition is required to make a mark in one’s career; so how can that be consistent with spirit of detachment ? Another related question I have is that , what all does ‘prescribed duty’ mean apart from profession ? Thank you.
