Recently I watched a You Tube video of Tanjore Big Temple. In that the commentator mention about the deity as shiva’s representation of Phallus. He also mention as phallic worship. Can you give an acceptable explanation of Shiv Linga? Merely saying all vigrahas are symbolic representation of God. Then follows the question why Linga in the shape of phallus and the base as yoni. As a new age Acharyan I request your opinion humbly for the benefit of children who read Hinduism in USA . Thank you very much.

The meaning of ‘lingam’ is “the symbol”.
If you scientifically analyse the shape of whole universes, it is oval and all life in the universe is also having the same shape.
Siva is the consciousness that is the cause behind the universe and Lingam is the manifestation of the universe.
The whole truth about the creation is revealed through this simple symbolization.
