Respected Swamiji There is no doubt about the fact that the present generation is growing up away from their roots and that we need to instill our values in them. Our epics and Puranas play an important part but sometimes it can be difficult to explain our epics to them. For instance I have four-year old twin grandchildren growing up in USA. How can I explain Seeta’s agnipariksha to them. How can I tell them that a woman would have to jump into the fire to prove her innocence and purity? It is important to understand these stories allowing space for its narrative exaggeration. That is why Ramayana and Mahabharata are called Ithihahas. Though it is primarily the story of Rama or Krishna said to convey the evolution of the human consciousness, all stories in there cannot be taken in a literal sense. What we need to tell our children in Sita’s agnipariksha Or Rama’s ekapatni vrutham is the love and mutual commitment of a couple in marriage. It is exaggerated as Agnipariksha because fire is the element that establishes perfection in purity. The stories are beautifully said so we establish the TATWAM in our mind. When the kid is small just tell them the story….. when they are old enough to ask “why?” ……tell them the tatwam behind it. Hari Om.
