Revered Swamiji, In today’s (08.08.2009) discourse you gave a quotation from the Veda which prohibits idol worship. Kindly repeat it to enable me to note it down properly, and also mention in which Veda it appears. Adi Sankaracharya is said to have composed a hymn of apology seeking pardon for three mistakes he did: for going to temples, for glorifying God in hymns and for undertaking pilgrimages. Is there such a hymn by Adi Sankaracharya, if so, what is its name ? I am deeply touched that even when you are on tour you take time to answer your followers queries without fail. Thank you. Respectfully, E Vishwa Nathan

Dear Viswanathan,
In Veda, it is not prohibiting idol worship; in Vedic times, the masters could realize and experience the Lord who resides in us as Chaithanyam, without any external aid/support. When the human mind became weak because of attraction towards the world, then the Great Masters recommended the idol worship as a support to the mind to transcend all the limitations; ie. thoughts about past and future.
There is a a statement by Adi Sankara during hos last days, which I shall shortly answer.
