Saints like Ramana Maharishi insist that it is not necessary to cultivate positive thoughts to counter negative thinking but one has to go beyond thoughts and “still” the mind to realize the truth, otherwise it would lead to greater addiction and bondage to this world. Is not positive thinking a western psychological approach? Eastern philosophies like ours and buddhism emphasize on emptying the mind of all thoughts. Kindly clarify.

Dear Murali Mohan,
Thoughtless mind is not a no-mind. Samadhi is not a thoughtless state; it is no-mind state. Thoughtless mind can be developed either through sleep or drugs. No-mind state comes only when you uproot all the negative impressions in the mind. If there is an iota of impressions you can not achieve this no-mind state. To uproot the negative impressions you require positive thoughts. It is like cleaning a room. No-mind state is like a cleaned room. The dust in the room is the negative impressions and the broom is the positive thoughts. After cleaning the room, you have to throw away both. Then you are beyond negative as well as positive thoughts. This is the no-mind state.
