Lord Rama lived in this world as embodiment of Dharma, so He was called ‘Maryada Purushothama’.
He was playing different roles as a King, son, husband as you know.
He had to rule the kingdom as a just ruler.
At the same time, He had to take care of most beloved wife Sita and give her a peaceful and safe environment to give birth to their children.
Sage Valmiki’s Ashram was very dear to Devi Sita and she would be safe with the great sage’s Satsang.
Any sort of rumours could disturb her, so Lord Rama took that painful decision with wisdom.
It is lesson to us while taking difficult decisions in our own lives.
