swamiji,what is the purpose of ”poonool”? why brahmin”s wearing it?

Dear Anuradha,
“Poonool” is a representation of importance of spiritual realization. Our shastras say that there are three obstacles for expanding the spiritual energy within. One is body consciousness, second is objects related to body consciousness and third is consciousness about others. When you forget memories of the body,objects and others you will be able to enter the chamber of pure consciousness. These obstacles are represented by the three threads in the poonool.
