what is the idea of wearing ceremonial thread ( poo-nulu )
Posted by Rajan on November 9, 2016
Yajnopavita (poo-nulu) also called the ‘sacred thread‘ consists of three strands symbolizing the responsibilities of the individual to his parents, guru and society, all of which enable him to study. It is adorned ceremoniously during the “upanayam” meaning “moving closer”. During this samskara, the child is initiated to Gayatri Mantram and he enters the study of scriptures thus moving closer to knowledge or the ultimate truth. Upanayanam thus symbolizes a second birth in knowledge and the poo-nulu is worn to recognize a person committed to this second birth in knowledge. Hari Om.
