As you know Dasavathara is a depiction of the evolution of human consciousness. In Matsyavathara, Bhagavan at time of Pralaya (destruction of material world) reveals himself as a small fish to King Satyavrata, then grows into a big fish even outgrowing the ocean. He saves all species at the time of pralaya in a boat build by King Satyavrata, he saves the Saptarishis and he retrieves the Vedas stolen by Somakasura. The story tells you in order to protect humanity/ community/world one needs to outgrow of his own weaknesses and smallness(pettiness) and dedicate selflessly to the noble cause. He also needs to direct the followers with good vision/ focus and impart right wisdom signified by retrieving the Vedas from asurik forces. Hari Om.
