We know the story behind Shivaratri. Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison, Halaa-hala that came out of the ocean during the Samudra Madhanam to protect the universe from destruction. Shiva did this because of his utmost kindness towards the beings and the poison was held in his throat with the power of Yoga. This made his throat turn blue, and he was given the name Neelakanda. All Devas glorified the greatness of Shiva and we celebrate Shivaratri to remember this event when Shiva saved the entire universe from destruction.
Shiva represents our mind. Rathri means to become peaceful. We need to develop three qualities to become peaceful in our life. Firstly, an ability to accept or face the adversities that arise in our lives. People who are not ready to face the challenges in the life may run away by putting the responsibility on others or blaming the situations. Regular spiritual practices of meditation or scriptural studies give us the inner power to face any challenges that may arise in our life.
The Second power is the power of inner tranquility. A calm or poised mind takes guidance from the inner intelligence and find solutions during any crisis whereas a disturbed mind either drag the problems or makes it more complex.
Third, the quality of kindness, kindness to forgive the people who create trouble to us and forget the unwanted situations. Every situation in life gives us an opportunity to discover our inner strength and real potential.
Let us invoke these three qualities in us during this auspicious day of Maha Shivaaatri to enjoy the total freedom and peace in our life.
