Athma refers to the individual consciousness that leaves the body and remains in the subtle form until it finds a suitable body to take a rebirth. Once you exhaust yourself of all your karmic debts you merge with the universal consciousness ( paramatma) and there is no more rebirths.
Or you are beyond birth and death.
