There is no definite answer to how long the soul takes to attain a new body. It depends on its karma sanskara. The after death rites should be looked upon as a means to acknowledge the departed and pay homage to them. They are not done for the soul that passed. Accordingly, how long it should be done can be decided. Hari Om
