Is it okay if I learn the Vedas by myself, by first byheart and then fine tuning through recitation? Would it be counted as a sin If I do it this way, w/o a guru?

There is a definite difference between casual reading and chanting as a spiritual practice or Upasana.
For Upasana, you must be initiated by an Acharya or Guru for perfect learning.
It is an auspicious spiritual practice.
