Pradakshina means onwards to the south, or towards knowledge. In doing pradakshina, we identify God as the center of our life, and the whole universe. It also reminds the devotee to follow the path of dharma or righteousness. According to Agamasastra, you do 4 pradakshinas for Devi and Vishnu. First pradakshina is to destroy your sins, second makes you qualified for spiritual pursuits and third helps control your senses and seek liberation.
The three point pradakshina at Shiva temple denotes the three levels of your alertness- jagrat, swapna and sushupti. Beyond these stages there is a level called “Thuriya” in which you are consciously able to detach the mind from the body. This involves controlling your senses and an inward journey towards higher awareness. So in Shiva temples you turn around and walk backward after 3/4 pradakshina.
It is important to do pradakshina slowly and with a meditative mind. Hari Om.
