Dear Swamiji, We conducted a sayoojya pooja at our house earlier and our priest with his daughter attended this. She was putting ‘chamatha”sticks in the agni (fire) chanting mantras till the puja ended. This invited a lot of criticisms in our house saying that ladies cannot chant gayathri or mruthyunjaya manthra and do homam in the agni. I discussed this matter with the priest and what he said that his daughter was so interested in the pooja from her childhood and she knows all the poojas, ganapathi homam, mrityunjaya homam and suhruda homam etc and doing at their home. i told our family members that in the ancient times we had a lot of female scholars like Mythreyi, Lopamudra, Gargi and all who chant veda mantra and do poojas. In our present times, boys are not interested to study all these, when a girl comes forward, we should appreciate her. Swamiji, what is your opinion whr ladies cannot do the poojas and homam. Pls advs.

Hinduism unlike other religions consider even the divine to be a female. We should encourage efforts by any individual to study the Vedas and mantras irrespective of caste, creed or sex. I really congratulate the priest and his blessed daughter. A renaissance is needed in our minds. It is common that some discomfort happens when we try to change an established system. Your family members are not used to seeing a girl doing pooja, but when more girls start doing it, they will accept it. Established norms can be changed only with reasoning and understanding. Hari Om.
