Swamiji, Our generation take in everything that is logical and scientific. For most of us our devotion to God is out of our fear for the wrath of God if we didnt pray which was taught to us in our childhood by our elders. Our complete ignorance in hindu philosophy compells us to question our own devotion at trying times. How can we seek or learn an unflactuating devotion at present rather than taking the time to wait for the life experiences to teach the existence of a Higher Power.

The first things to know is that Hinduism does not talk of a God outside you, who will punish you or reward you. That idea totally belongs to Semitic religions. According to Hinduism, you are part of an all pervading Divine energy which sustains the Universe. Your experiences in life are directed by your own karma, whether you experience it first hand or later. So, the first thing to do, is have faith in yourself and be determined to improving your qualities. When you are the seat of goodness you will find the divine everywhere. That is the ultimate devotion. Since your generation is logical and scientific, and modern medicine has undoubtedly spoken on the benefits of meditation, start with practice of meditation for 10 minutes. All fears will subside and you will get clarity of thoughts. Hari Om.
