Vanaprastha the third stage in Varna- Asrama- Dharma roughly is about 50-70 yrs of age when a person gradually transfers the household responsibilities to the next generation and slowly withdraws from his material life. In olden times, people went to the forests on a pilgrimage with their wives and hence the name Vanaprastha. Understanding and practicing Vanaprastha has an immense value in todays’ world of material indulgence. People are essentially chasing money, fame and glory only to lose health and peace of mind at their prime times. By age 50 if you can transfer most of the responsibilities of the household to your children, they will become responsible adults and you will find more time to indulge in things that make you more complete. Life of a householder is loaded with responsibilities to the family. Middle age is when you can devote your time and energy for the society. You should then be able to develop a mentality of “Vasudaiva kudumbakam” and look at the whole world as yours. Hari Om.
