Ritualism without understanding, and knowledge without necessary practice,  are equally bad. I have to tell you, there is a reason to light the lamp in a house at twilight and you should necessarily do it with your children. You feel that is a superstition or cliche because no one told you why it is done. The best way to introduce kids to religion is through the many beautiful stories of Krishna, Ganesha, Hanuman, Devi etc. Slowly you can teach them what the moral is and what we need to adopt in life. Let them chant Gayathri Mantra in the mornings and do Namajapam in the evenings before they study. Practice 10 minutes of quiet time with them before they sleep and have them chant a dhyanamantram of their favorite deity and “kayenavaacha…….” before sleep. Explain to them what they mean by saying that. As they progress you can introduce other mantras. Practice all festivals at home in full colour and vibrance. Let kids be part of it. These are the things they will love you for when they grow up……because those are the moments that will add “life” to the many days lived. Hari Om.
