Pranaam Swamiji,What is the significance of celebrating Thiruvathira? What is the right way to celebrate the same?Hari Om.
Posted by Prathiksha on January 10, 2017
Thiruvathira is celebrated on the full moon night of the month Dhanu. It is the longest night of the year. The cosmic dance of Lord Shiva represents Destruction, Release and Re-creation. In essence, it represents the continuous cycle that takes place in every particle and is the source of all energy. In South India the cosmic dance is celebrated during Thiruvathira and Shiva is worshipped as Nataraja. In Kerala, it is celebrated as the day when Siva took Parvati as his consort and became Ardhanareeswara. Hence, women fast and keep night vigil to get ideal husbands or for the long life of their partners. The celebrations and rituals vary in different places, though fasting, pathirapoochoodal, ettangaadi etc. are common in most places. Hari Om.
