Swamiji, thanks for clearing my doubt.. but there is one more question about death related functions..it is said that till the ‘adiyantiram’ everyone at home has ‘ashudhi’ so that all the dresses they touch need to be washed after the ‘adiyantiram’ and the house needs to be cleaned.. it takes lot of effort …we are not allowed to light lamps in the evening till the adiyanthiram function.. Swamiji, please explain me whether these terms are relevant.. and why it asked to do so.

In the past when deaths were most often due to infections, people of the family were asked to stay away from temples and other rituals for two weeks and clean the house as well. It was a way to allow them a mourning period together, to come out of their loss and return to normal life. But in today’s world such extended families don’t exist in a household and most of these rituals don’t have much relevance. Rituals are practices applicable to certain times and places. Hence, we should be able to apply logic and discretion in what we want to follow and practice. Hari Om.
