My humble pranaams to you swamiji….am sending this question to you with lot of sadness and worry in our mind. My son who just joined engg egg in a college in chennai is now so adamant that he wants to change the college just because it is so strict. Yes..i admit that the college is v strict in discipline and studies….cell phones strictly not allowed and attendance should be regular etc….he says it’s like a jail for him. In his school he enjoyed his life…by even not studying and freaking out.. gave us mental torture by not attending many of his classes and tests exams….we had to meet his school Principal after every tests…he never used to cut his hair..he is still having strong affair with his school mate who studied well and is in a college out of chennai. After his 12th exam 4 months holidays he had …and just on 28th August only his first year college classes started…and right from the first day….hes not eating properly and adamant that we have to change the college…but swamiji.. that college brings up students in a v disciplined and well cultured way and producing v good results…with his v low marks we spent lot of money to get admission even after telling all these he’s not willing to understand our difficulty..pls advise what to do and how to handle this situation….hari om

I totally understand your helplessness. Parents often tend to forget that they don’t own their children. Growing up, career and life choices should be made by the parents and child together. For that, a sense of togetherness has to be there right from childhood. It is not what your son does now that matters here. It is the kind of understanding that exists between you and him, that is important. Unfortunately, that seems to be missing. He is fighting you and the system at every point. Do you know why? That is what we need to find out first. Then the solution is easy. Talk to him and write back to me. You can also approach a one of his close friends to understand his outlook on things. Hari Om.
